The DRC is a jungle-y country in sub-Saharan Africa not so far from Gabon where I lived during the Peace Corps. It is not easy to grasp how the world’s demand for diamonds can cause people pain and strife, such as it does in the DRC, but this short video does a very good job of explaining.

Another source of pain and strife is "coltan".  Trying to stop the exploitation will require some thought.  'There is very little the "man on the street" can do to prevent Coltan exploitation as it is not a "visible" component of cellphones that can be differentiated when shopping.'
